Gem 3571113
Sound installation + etching print
Gem 3571113 is a work of sound designed to be exhibited in a dedicated and space, just like a sculpture or a painting.
It has been realised in the form of a web application, to listen to it you need an internet connection and a stereo audio system.
It appears as a continuous crossfading between random combinations of sinewaves tuned on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 11th and 13th harmonics of a fundamental A-440.
It has no beginning or end, its duration coincides with the time of contemplation. The sounds are generated electronically with sinusoidal oscillators.
The sound installation is accompanied by the score of the work, a 26x19cm etching print produced by the Stamperia d'Arte Albicocco in 23 numbered copies.
The score was inspired by the notation system for just intonation invented by the Mexican-American music theorist Erv Wilson.
Gem 3 5 7 11 13 is ideally designed for a quiet space. It is not suitable for either outdoor or headphone listening. The quality of the audio system significantly affects the aesthetic result; I recommend the use of a subwoofer.
The artprint is an integral and indivisable part of the work.
